BANNING GUNS šŸš±ā‰ļø
#6
Let's maybe put things into perspective. Here's how it works in Australia, at least to my understanding. All firearm owners are required to store their firearms securely in a locked, steel safe, and the firearm must be fitted with a trigger or barrel lock while stored. If the safe itself weighs under 150kg while empty, it must be bolted to the structure of the premises. The police do regular firearm safe inspections; they contact you to arrange a time for a face-to-face inspection, and if they find you have failed to meet the requirements, you can face a fine and - if I'm not mistaken - up to 12 months in prison.

The story is similar in pretty much every other developed nation, the only exception being the United States as far as I'm aware. Compared to what every other developed nation is already doing, what Kamala is suggesting in this 17 year old video is not a big deal at all. It's not "marxist" and it's certainly not "anti-gun" legislation. Legislation that helps ensure responsible firearm ownership is pro-gun, not anti-gun. It's just not pro-homicide.

By the way, some fun stats: did you know that you're 25 times more likely to get shot to death in America than any other developed nation? Did you know that homicide rates in general are 7 times higher in America than any other developed nation? Did you know that since 2021, there have been over 70 school shootings PER YEAR in the US? To once again maybe put things into perspective, there have been 6 school shootings in Australia since 1991, with a total of 3 deaths. And this is probably on the higher end for developed nations (excluding the US).

Of course, the US is unique in that, well, guns are already everywhere. But I don't think it makes sense to use that as an excuse to just... give up, and continue to allow gun violence to run rampant. I think the US could still benefit a lot from way stricter gun laws and way tougher sentences for gun-related crimes. Unfortunately, I think getting any positive change is an up-hill battle. Republican fearmongering has been too successful in convincing a generation of rednecks that their guns are on the verge of being taken away. Case in point: the utterly vapid and embarrassing video from the OP.
